Glenn Kazuo Yamada

October 9, 1940 - June 29, 2021

Glenn Kazuo Yamada, 80, of Honolulu, passed away on June 29, 2021. He graduated from Mid-Pacific Institute in 1958 and was 3rd best in the long jump in the Territory of Hawaii and also excelled in the pole vault. At the University of Hawaii, where he graduated in 1962, he participated in track and field events and was a member of the ROTC. After graduation he served in the Army as a Second Lieutenant until he was honorably discharged as a Captain on June 12, 1969. He was an usher at JFK’s funeral and escorted dignitaries to their seats. After his time in the Army, he worked for Swift & Co, Mapelli Brothers, Monfort Foods and Conagra. He enjoyed attending UH football games, golfing (he had two holes in one), and watching various sports and movies. In his retirement, he took pleasure in yard work, (even for neighbors), fixing things, getting together with friends and classmates, helping others, and chatting with people who walked past the house. He really looked forward to the annual visit of his grandchildren from Oregon and took time to research activities they might enjoy during their visit. He decorated the house and yard to amuse them, enjoyed playing with them at home, and relished taking them on excursions to the zoo, the aquarium, to the pool, and to eat shaved ice. He was the kindest, friendliest, and most generous man, and he will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Elaine Ikeda, stepdaughter, Shannon Glennie, stepson, Robert Shinke, son-in-law, Paul Duman, and grandchildren, Stella, Seth and Silas. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Trisha Mayumi Duman, parents, Yoshio and Beatrice Yamada, and brother, Gary Yamada. Services will be held when Covid restrictions are lifted.
