Lydia K.C. Kauha Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

of (and born in) Honolulu, Hawaii passed away peacefully in her home on June 6, 2022 surrounded by her family. She spent more than 25 years working for the Internal Revenue Service and continued to work through her retirement years at Nu’uanu Elementary School as a Cashier and Early Morning Care Assistant. Lydia is survived by her 3 children - Marjorie Tupper, Debbie Wentzel and David Kauha; 5 grandchildren - Manu, Tommy, Ethan, Pua and Sam; 1 great grandchild - Noah; 2 brothers - Kenneth Chun and Carl Chun; former husband - Solomon Kauha; as well as nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Lydia made sure to shepherd her daughters, and later her granddaughter, to hula classes at Leilani Alama’s Hula Studio. She eventually took hula for herself and enjoyed dancing with her hula ‘ohana at both Leilani and Puanani Alama’s Hula Studios. She also loved making and sharing delectable treats like gau, almond cookies, mango bread, and furikake chex mix with family and friends, near and far. Lydia enjoyed her years tending to the progress of the Honolulu Federal Credit Union (HOCU) starting from when she worked at the Internal Revenue Service. She was a long-time member of HOCU’s Board of Directors. As noted in a recent HOCU tribute to her, “Lydia was a fierce advocate for the credit union movement and a HOCU member for over 42 years.” More importantly, she was kind to those she knew. HOCU’S President/CEO Mark Munemitsu said, “Lydia was so giving of her time as a volunteer, always with the credit union and its members in mind. She was the consummate professional as a Board member, yet she always found time to do the simplest of gestures, such as baking her delicious chocolate chip cookies and bringing them for the credit union staff to enjoy.” Lydia will be dearly missed, and always remembered. Her thoughtfulness, strong work ethic and drive to persevere are qualities we will miss and strive to emulate. At Oʻahu Mortuary Chapel, the family will welcome friends of Lydia and her family from 2:30 pm to 3:45pm on Saturday, July 23, 2022. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to one of the following organizations to honor Lydia’s memory: Mālama Ola Health Services, The Hula Preservation Society, American Cancer Society.
