Marianne Rouse Chung

December 28, 1943 - July 15, 2018

Marianne Chung “Two roads diverged in a wood and I - I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” - Robert Frost Marianne Rouse Chung, 74, of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi passed on July 15, 2018, immensely loved by her family and friends. She was born on December 28, 1943 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Teddy Vance and Mary Annetta Crouch Rouse. She grew up in Webster Groves, Missouri, and graduated from the Central Institute for the Deaf. She received a Bachelor in Arts with a major in Psychology and a minor in English, from Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. She then earned a Masters in Science degree in Education from the University of Illinois Champaign, in Urbana, Illinois. While at Gallaudet, she met Tien Fook Chung, and in 1968 they married and moved to Hawaiʻi after she finished her graduate degree. After a few years as a librarian in the Hawaiʻi State Library system, she spent the remainder of her professional life as a dedicated specialist and passionate advocate for the deaf and hard of hearing community. A great friend, loving mother, devoted grandmother, and wife, she enjoyed her precious free time most with those who meant the most to her. Although she enjoyed books, captioned movies, and crossword puzzles, she most loved spending time with her friends and family. These times were generally best spent accompanied by ice cream, cookies, or brownies. (The addition of pecan pie was always considered a coveted bonus.) Marianne is survived by her husband, Tien Fook Chung; daughter, Aimee B. Chung; grandson Daniel K. Poʻokela Kaalakea, and brother, Joseph Dudley Rouse. Their brother, Robert Rouse, passed away just weeks after her own passing. Friends and family are warmly invited to celebrate her life on Friday, August 17, 2018 at Oʻahu Cemetery Chapel, 2162 Nuuanu Avenue, Honolulu, HI. Visiting begins at 3:00 PM, the service starts at 4:00 PM, followed by snacks and refreshments. Casual attire. In lieu of flowers or monetary gifts, the family suggests donations in her name to Gallaudet Alumni Association or the Hawaiʻi Theater for Youth, ASL Interpreter fund. (Instructions to be posted soon.)
