Phyllis Nathelle Chillingworth Garrett

December 14, 1922 - September 9, 2019

Phyllis Nathelle Chillingworth Garrett Born December 14, 1922, dear “Philly” left us on September 9, 2019. The second of Ethel and Bob Chillingworth’s four children, her life was filled with laughter and an abundance of friends. Her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and even family “out-laws” adored her. At Roosevelt, Phyllis excelled as a songleader, ROTC sponsor, and an editor of The Rough Rider newspaper. After graduation in 1940, she worked for Standard Oil Company and in the Red Cross field office at Hickam during the war. It was then that she met the young navy officer who married this island girl and took her to a new life in his home state of North Carolina. Though the marriage ended, the many southern friendships she formed endured forever. Home again in Honolulu and the single mother of two daughters, Phyllis worked as an executive secretary at Alexander & Baldwin for 27 years. There business was business but lunch breaks were filled with rounds of cribbage and laughter with her “work family.” Though in later years it required some coaxing, her sassy performance of E Huli Makou always delighted family and friends – those who were at the core of her heart. Predeceased by siblings, Maris Gray and Mert Chillingworth, Phyllis is survived by brother, Sherwood, daughters Elaine Evans and Laurie (David) Callies; grandsons: Carter and Jamie Evans and Lindsey Breeden and eight great-grandchildren. A Celebration of her Life will be held at the Bayer Estate on Sunday, September 22, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Phyllis’ family would like to thank her nurses, aides and the St. Francis Hospice staff for their compassionate care in her final months.
