Keola was fourth child born to Frank Piulu Kahapea Jr. and Victoria Kamakaninui Kepilino Kahapea. There were 8 children 1 (deceased after birth). Keola is survived by three brothers, a sister and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great grandnieces and great grandnephews. His brothers are Kanui (Barbara), Kalei (Ilima(D)), Ron (Bobbie), and Chester (deceased); Sisters Nano Bee (deceased) and Lurline; Keola attended St. Augustine elementary school in Waikiki, transferred to William P Jarrett Middle School and graduated from Kaimuki High School. Keola worked as a clerk for Young Brothers. In his younger days he loved to referee Volleyball games. I am sure the love of volleyball was passed on by his mama. Keola also loved to ride the bus, but who on Oahu doesn’t love to ride the bus for fun. He was very crafty, he enjoyed making leis, and Keola was very good at it. Also in his spare time, he loved to solve word puzzles. He grew up in Palolo Valley and lived on 9th and Pa’alea with Mama, Daddy and his siblings. There were 8 mango trees, 1 lychee tree, a hibiscus bush and lots and lots of tall grass in the back yard. When it rained, it was not unusual to bring out all the pots and pans, and bowls. Didn’t everyone live this way? The family moved to Waialae Avenue, then to 21st Avenue, staying in the Kaimuki/Waialae area. This is where Keola met his wife Gilberta “Gilly” Paoa. She was introduced to Keola by sister Nano. “Gilly and Nano were co-workers and it wasn’t long after this initial meeting before Keola and Gilly started to court. Soon after they married. Keola, in his younger days, was tall and lanky and loved to eat. When I say he loved to eat, he would make a plate of food, piled high. Then when he was pau with that one, he’d go back for seconds, with another plate of food, piled high, he would go at it. You could say he had a tape worm because he never gained a pound, lucky him right. Well this all changed when he got married. He would still eat the same way, but now he was packing on the pounds This man loved to eat! Keola and Gilly moved to Palolo Valley Apartments where they lived for many years…you had to be very dedicated or in pretty good shape, to climb those stairs. If they didn’t live on the top floor, it was pretty close to it. If you went for a visit, you better stay awhile to catch your breath and take a nap. After his beloved Gilly passed away, Keola was like a gypsy, living with different family and friends. When Keola was accepted to live at the Nanakuli apartments, he was so excited to finally settle in to what he considered as “HOME” As time passed Keola’s illness made it difficult to care for himself and the family made the difficult decision to move him into a nursing home. The Kahapea Family would like to thank the Care Centers of Honolulu Staff and all others who took part of Caring for our Brother/Uncle Keola throughout his Life. Also a big Mahalo to the Zenni Abalos and Activities Department, for always being on time with the FaceTime Calls which meant the world to me (his sister Lurline).
